KeyStrokes is a soft keyboard that generates an image of a keyboard on the Macintosh display for those who cannot enter text using a hard keyboard. A mouse or a mouse emulator is used to select and enter characters by pointing and clicking on the keys. Operations that require simultaneous actuation of more than one key are performed using the special sticky key feature of KeyStrokes. This allows command key and other modifier key-click combinations to be performed. Characters are sent to any application running natively on OS 9, OS 10 and into any application running in Classic Mode. KeyStrokes can be used to access all areas of the Operating System except for logging in and entering secure screen saver passwords.
Six resizable keyboard layouts are included. The layouts differ by whether they include a number pad, function keys, navigation keys and ordering of the keys in qwerty or alphabetical order. With the latest release a number pad keyboard has been added. The simple keyboard layouts are suited for children or people with limited cognitive ability. Key separation and other aspects of key and keyboard background appearance can be modified. The keyboards can be resized by selecting several preset sizes or they can be drag sized like any window. All international keyboards supported by the operating system are supported by KeyStrokes.
KeyStrokes provides advanced multilingual word prediction. The PolyPredix™ word prediction engine does word completion, next word prediction and multi-word prediction in languages that use the Roman and non-Roman character sets such as Cyrillic. The PolyPredix™ prediction engine offers many time and effort saving features that enhance user productivity. There is the capability to display one line of text as it is being entered in the PolyPredix area (Typing Field) of the KeyStrokes keyboard. This feature can minimize eye strain by reducing the requirement to redirect one's gaze from the application to the keyboard and back.
KeyStrokes provides audio feedback to the user and in addition, it can speak the characters entered in English. The capability to speak is only available while running under Mac OSX.
Smart Transparency (available only on Mac OSX) can be used to automatically "hide" the keyboard when it is not being used. If the mouse is moved outside of the keyboard window it can be configured to fade from fully opaque to any level of transparency. This will provide visual access to items under the keyboard window when text entry is not underway. The final level of transparency, time to fade and fade rate are all configured using KeyStrokes preferences.
